From the phone call to a permitted, working heater

Six stages, and you know the price before stage four. This is the same process whether it is a thermocouple at 9am or a full heat pump conversion.

What actually happens

Nothing here is unusual. It is just written down, which is more than most quotes give you.

You call, and we ask three questions. What is the unit doing, roughly how old is it, and is it gas or electric. Half the time that is enough to name the likely fault and confirm the part is on the truck before anyone leaves.
A licensed technician tests it on site. Not a glance and a guess — gas pressure, continuity, thermostat calibration, anode condition, T&P operation, venting. There is no diagnostic fee whatever the outcome.
You get a flat-rate price in writing. Where both are realistic you get the repair number and the replacement number side by side, with a recommendation and the reasoning. Technicians are not on commission, so the recommendation is just an opinion rather than a sales target.
You decide. If you say no, you owe nothing and nobody calls you back four times. If you say yes, the number is locked — a job that turns out harder than expected is our problem.
The work happens, usually the same visit. Replacements include haul-away and recycling of the old unit. Installations include the venting, the gas line, the expansion tank, the pan and the seismic strapping.
Permit, inspection, warranty. We file with Portland BDS, schedule the inspection and hand you the documentation. Every job carries one year on parts and labour, and that is honoured without an argument.

What is included

None of these are extras on our invoices. They are in the flat rate, because leaving them out is how a cheap quote becomes an expensive job.

No diagnostic fee and no trip charge anywhere inside Portland city limits, whether or not you go ahead with the work.
